Surah Abasa - He Frowned

Chapter 80Meccan42 verses
عبس
Verse 1

بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمـٰنِ الرَّحيمِ عَبَسَ وَتَوَلّىٰ

The Prophet frowned and turned away

Verse 2

أَن جاءَهُ الأَعمىٰ

Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].

Verse 3

وَما يُدريكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكّىٰ

But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified

Verse 4

أَو يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ الذِّكرىٰ

Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?

Verse 5

أَمّا مَنِ استَغنىٰ

As for he who thinks himself without need,

Verse 6

فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدّىٰ

To him you give attention.

Verse 7

وَما عَلَيكَ أَلّا يَزَّكّىٰ

And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.

Verse 8

وَأَمّا مَن جاءَكَ يَسعىٰ

But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]

Verse 9

وَهُوَ يَخشىٰ

While he fears [Allah],

Verse 10

فَأَنتَ عَنهُ تَلَهّىٰ

From him you are distracted.

Verse 11

كَلّا إِنَّها تَذكِرَةٌ

No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder;

Verse 12

فَمَن شاءَ ذَكَرَهُ

So whoever wills may remember it.

Verse 13

في صُحُفٍ مُكَرَّمَةٍ

[It is recorded] in honored sheets,

Verse 14

مَرفوعَةٍ مُطَهَّرَةٍ

Exalted and purified,

Verse 15

بِأَيدي سَفَرَةٍ

[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,

Verse 16

كِرامٍ بَرَرَةٍ

Noble and dutiful.

Verse 17

قُتِلَ الإِنسانُ ما أَكفَرَهُ

Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he.

Verse 18

مِن أَيِّ شَيءٍ خَلَقَهُ

From what substance did He create him?

Verse 19

مِن نُطفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ

From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;

Verse 20

ثُمَّ السَّبيلَ يَسَّرَهُ

Then He eased the way for him;

Verse 21

ثُمَّ أَماتَهُ فَأَقبَرَهُ

Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.

Verse 22

ثُمَّ إِذا شاءَ أَنشَرَهُ

Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.

Verse 23

كَلّا لَمّا يَقضِ ما أَمَرَهُ

No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.

Verse 24

فَليَنظُرِ الإِنسانُ إِلىٰ طَعامِهِ

Then let mankind look at his food -

Verse 25

أَنّا صَبَبنَا الماءَ صَبًّا

How We poured down water in torrents,

Verse 26

ثُمَّ شَقَقنَا الأَرضَ شَقًّا

Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],

Verse 27

فَأَنبَتنا فيها حَبًّا

And caused to grow within it grain

Verse 28

وَعِنَبًا وَقَضبًا

And grapes and herbage

Verse 29

وَزَيتونًا وَنَخلًا

And olive and palm trees

Verse 30

وَحَدائِقَ غُلبًا

And gardens of dense shrubbery

Verse 31

وَفاكِهَةً وَأَبًّا

And fruit and grass -

Verse 32

مَتاعًا لَكُم وَلِأَنعامِكُم

[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock.

Verse 33

فَإِذا جاءَتِ الصّاخَّةُ

But when there comes the Deafening Blast

Verse 34

يَومَ يَفِرُّ المَرءُ مِن أَخيهِ

On the Day a man will flee from his brother

Verse 35

وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبيهِ

And his mother and his father

Verse 36

وَصاحِبَتِهِ وَبَنيهِ

And his wife and his children,

Verse 37

لِكُلِّ امرِئٍ مِنهُم يَومَئِذٍ شَأنٌ يُغنيهِ

For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.

Verse 38

وُجوهٌ يَومَئِذٍ مُسفِرَةٌ

[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -

Verse 39

ضاحِكَةٌ مُستَبشِرَةٌ

Laughing, rejoicing at good news.

Verse 40

وَوُجوهٌ يَومَئِذٍ عَلَيها غَبَرَةٌ

And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.

Verse 41

تَرهَقُها قَتَرَةٌ

Blackness will cover them.

Verse 42

أُولـٰئِكَ هُمُ الكَفَرَةُ الفَجَرَةُ

Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.
