Some people drank alcoholic beverages in the morning (of the day) of the Uhud battle and on the same day they were killed as martyrs, and that was before wine was prohibited.

Book: Prophetic Commentary on the Qur'an (Tafseer of the Prophet (pbuh))
Chapter: Allah's Statement: "Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), gambling, Al-Ansab and Al-AzIam (arrows for seeking luck or a decision) are an abomination of Satan's handiwork..." (V.5:90)
